Hey music aficionados! Herewith pure bliss. He belongs in the small group of the best bassists in the planet. ONE HOUR OF JUST RICHARD BONA. A man I'm glad to call a friend.
Bona was born into a family of musicians, which enabled him to start learning music from a young age. His grandfather was a singer (griot) and percussionist, and his mother was a singer. At 4 years old, he started to play the balafon. At the age of 5, he began performing at his village church. Not being wealthy, Bona made many of his own instruments: including flutes and guitars (with cords strung over an old motorcycle tank).
His talent was quickly noticed, and he was often invited to perform at festivals and ceremonies. Bona began learning to play the guitar at age 11, and in 1980 aged just 13, he assembled his first ensemble for a French jazz club in Douala.[1] The owner befriended him and helped him discover jazz music and, notably including Jaco Pastorius in particular, whose work inspired Bona to switch his focus to the electric bass.
Bona emigrated to Germany at the age of 22 to study music in Düsseldorf,[1] soon relocating to France, where he furthered his studies in music.
Whilst in France, he regularly played in various jazz clubs, sometimes with players such as Manu Dibango, Salif Keita, Jacques Higelin and Didier Lockwood.
In 1995, Richard left France and established himself in New York, where he still lives and works. There he has had stints with artists like Larry Coryell, Michael and Randy Brecker, Mike Stern, and Steve Gadd.
In 1998, Richard was the Musical Director on Harry Belafonte's European Tour.
His first solo album, Scenes from My Life, was released in 1999. He has also been prominently featured in Jaco Pastorius Big Band albums, as well as many other albums by various top-tier jazz musicians.
In 2002 Bona went on a world tour with the Pat Metheny Group as a percussionist/vocalist.
In 2005 Bona released his fourth album Tiki, which included a collaboration with John Legend on one track, entitled "Please Don't Stop."
He currently holds a professorship of music at New York University.

Richard Bona ON TOUR.
Info and tickets: http://www.richard-bona.com/shows

Richard Bona’s seemingly effortless voice, fierce skills on the bass, unique songwriting/arranging expertise and ability to learn just about any instrument simply from watching, position him as a rare African artist to have established an international reputation that transcends cultural boundaries. His new album is a compilation of art inspired by the shared heritage, rich folkloric and traditional music of West Africa and Cuba. Sit back and experience art with a purpose; Richard Bona and the Mandekan Cubano have carefully crafted a fusion of sounds, which merge cultures together through their ability to speak the universal language of music.
More than just a statement put to a tune, music is an outpouring of one’s soul in a deeply personal manner and that is exactly what “Heritage” serves to do. It is a window into the years of oral stories that have been passed down and placed in the musical prowess of Bona and the Mandekan Cubano. While this is Bona's first official Afro-Cuban record, it is not his first endeavor in the African music scene—rather, it is the culmination of his decades of experience in various genres, which produces an authentic expression of culture through sound. Preserving the traditions of the western African slave "Cabildos," Bona and the Mandekan Cubano bring the music, dance, rituals, and oral history of the island to the comfort of your home. Seeking inspiration from his origins, the themes of Bona’s art address international issues, which mirror his desire of utilizing music to take a stance on issues affecting the oppressed or the forgotten cultures of the people who so courageously paved the way for the life we presently live. The polyrhythmic beat felt in many of the tracks paradoxically serves as the bridge between African and Cuban music.
In present day society, we often get trapped into rigid lifestyles that reflect only one type of musical influence or culture. However, our world is vast, diverse, and is supported by the beautiful interweaving of multiple backgrounds. Without such diversity, our world would cease to be, quite frankly, a “world.” Its very definition reveals that it is “the earth, together with all of its countries, people, and natural features.” As a result, this album serves to educate listeners of the beauty that is created from remaining true to ones roots, yet also stepping outside of oneself to learn from others. Separately we succeed, but together, we thrive.

hr-BIGBAND feat. RICHARD BONA
Richard Bona | electric bass
Michael Philip Mossman | conductor
Soloists: Richard Bona, vocals

VOCAL SOLO is a composition by Richard Bona

Live-Recording at hr-Sendesaal, Frankfurt, march 22nd 2018

African grooves, virtuoso bass lines and feather-light singing in the tradition of West African griots: Richard Bona weaves these ingredients into a music for head, heart and feet. Richard Bona built his first bass himself from crates and bicycle brake ropes. A French jazz club owner in Douala had played recordings of Jaco Pastorius to the thirteen-year-old Richard and thus pointed the way. Otherwise the Cameroonian might have become famous only as a singer. With his feathery falsetto singing, in which the West African Griot tradition is suspended, he is still enchanting. But it is his astonishing virtuosity on the electric bass that first paved Bona's way into the bands of Salif Keita and Manu Dibangu and finally into those of jazz fusion greats like Pat Metheny, Michael Brecker or Joe Zawinul. Richard Bona has long been a star himself and is now playing together the hr big band with his own music.

deutsch:

Song written by Ariel Ramírez and Félix Luna. Performed by © Richard Bona.

Alfonsina y el Mar is an Argentinian song composed by pianist Ariel Ramírez and written by Félix Luna. It was first released as part of Mercedes Sosa's 1969 album Mujeres argentinas. The song is a tribute to poet Alfonsina Storni who took her life by jumping into the sea. She was struggling with breast cancer for a long time, and the night when she passed, she left a note to her son of the pain she is experiencing. February is Cancer Prevention Awareness Month. According to the American Institute for Cancer Research, about 50% of the most common cancer cases are preventable. Go do your regular checks and stay safe and healthy!
